The History of Wylie.tx.75098

Wylie, Texas is located in the Southeast corner of Collin County
sixteen miles south of McKinney, Texas (The County Seat). It is
located on State Highway 78 (N. & S.), and intersects with Farm
Road 544 (E. & W.), one quarter mile south of Ballard Avenue or,
Main Street as it were.

Wylie was originally organized in the early 1870’s as
Nickleville,
Texas and it is said to be the name of the first store founded.
In 1886 the Gulf, Colorado and Santa Fe Railway laid track about
a half mile north of the original town site. Within a year the
Nickleville businesses moved to take advantage of services
provided by the railroad, and in
doing that renamed their new
location Wylie. The name Wylie was for W.D.Wylie, a Civil War
veteran, and Right-of-Way agent for the railroad. The city is now
situated one half mile north of the original center.

In that same year it was granted a post office, and
incorporated,
with an alderman form of government.

In 1888 the St. Louis Southwestern railway came to
town. The rich
agricultural region, and the two railroads contributed to the town’s
growth. In 1890 the population of Wylie was 400, and grew to 773
by 1900.

Prior to 1920
the city had over thirty five businesses, including two
Banks (Current banking is now Capital One, Chase, Inwood National,
and The American National Bank of Texas). It also included a school,
and a weekly Newspaper (Wylie now has multiple schools including
elementary, middle and High Schools), and (It still has a newspaper
by the name of the Wylie News. I’m not sure if this is the same paper
or not).

In 1920 Wylie received electrical service and streetlights,
and in 1923
the main street (Ballard avenue), was changed from dirt to a graveled
street.

Unlike many rural Texas town’s, Wylie grew during the
depression
years thru 1940, and this was a result of increased dairy production to
meet the growing demands of the Dallas area. And, by 1940 reached a
population of 914.

Wylie as well, enjoyed the self-proclaimed “onion capital of the world”
title in the 30’s and 40’s. “Wide Awake Wylie” became the city’s
nickname in the late 40’s and 50’s for the late night get-together’s of
citizens in which businesses stayed open until midnight on some nights.

Following World War II the population continued to increase. The
construction of Lake Lavon five miles north of town and the selection
of Wylie to house the offices of the North Texas Municipal Water
District, designed to provide water for towns in four counties, pushed
the population to 1,804 in 1960. In the next twenty years the population
more than doubled as a result of the growth of the Dallas urban area.

In the late 70’s, Wylie began to receive some of the D/FW growth.
Specifically in the 1980’s and 1990’s, Wylie’s population grew significantly.
In 1980 there were 3,152 residents and ninety businesses in Wylie. In
1990 the population was 8,716, and Wylie had spread into Rockwall and
Dallas counties.

The 1990’s also saw two major catastrophes. On Mother’s Day in 1993,
a tornado hit Wylie. In December 1998, two fires (one on the 9th and
another on the 11th) destroyed and/or damaged a dozen or so businesses.
The city and it’s citizens used this to revitalize the downtown area. By the
year 2000 the population was 15,132.

In the 21st Century, Wylie has become one of the fastest growing
communities in Collin County, DFW metropolis and the State of Texas.
In fact, it is listed number 8 in fastest growing cities nationally. With that
growth, the City has made a transition from a “bedroom” community to a
“balanced” community combining quality residential living with a healthy
business climate.

So there you have it as far as I know.

The Police Department in WylieTx75098

Thursday, July 10th, 2008

This article is about the unsung hero’s in Wylie Texas. Specifically the Wylie Police Department. Wylie is a town in Southeast Collin County with a current population of 32,696. Not much is ever said about Law Enforcement in any community, but I wanted to give this department it’s just recognition.

When the city of Wylie Texas was formed in 1887 it had a Town Marshall as it’s law enforcement. This Town Marshall was a more administrative function than law enforcement. The longest holder of that station was Ham Hawrey who held it for about 6 years.

The Wylie Police Department came into being in the early 60’s when Barney Gaylor jr. was hired as it’s one and only police officer. The force at that time had a police car, and a small building erected next to a fire house was the jail. At that time the population was approximately 1,804.

Today however, the city has a population of 32,696 and is listed as number 8 in the fastest growing suburbs of Dallas Texas, and it’s projected to reach 39,000 by the end of 2008. The Police Department has grown to a reported 40 Officers plus admin staff.

The men and women of this police force are dedicated and committed to providing safe and secure neighborhoods through community oriented policing, improving the quality of life for it’s residents.

Let’s take a look at this department.

First and foremost are the Patrol Officers who are the front line in protecting and policing this community. They have currently one K-9 unit, with another in training. They are responsible for initial crime investigation and the protection of Wylie’s citizens. They provide around the clock 24/7 preventive patrol, service calls, traffic investigation and enforcement, and enforcement of all laws local, federal, and state. They are the first contact for the lost and homeless in the community. They have had one officer shot in the line of duty who survived those injuries.

School Resource Officers are stationed inside Wylie ISD schools providing school security, classroom instruction, anti-drug and alcohol instruction, and act as mentors to the students. They are the link between the Wylie ISD and the Police Department.\

The Criminal Investigative Division. They have 5 detectives and a Seargent who handle about 90 cases a month total. This division is responsible for solving 2 cold case murders in the past few years. They are the people who do follow up investigations to crimes. They investigate all homicides and do the CSI work. They obtain the arrest warrants, search warrants, and gather evidence which leads to successful prosecution of criminal offenders, and the recovery of stolen property. They maintain the Sex Offender data list. This division is at the heart of the department and are responsible for the things mentioned above and more.

The Records and Statistics division is responsible for maintaining the Uniform crime Reports. The Crime in Wylie dropped 17% in 2006 to 1,794 compared to the 2005 figures set at 2,107, and is currently at a lower level. These figures are based on Part 1 crimes which is the industry standard as selected by the FBI.

The SWAT team is comprised of well trained officers and handles critical incidents such as hostage situations, barricaded suspects, and serve felony and drug warrants. They are certified officers who are a mixture of Patrol and other officers.

In addition the Wylie Police Department provides a number of special services to the community. Some of those are Free Gun Locks, Home Security Evaluations, Neighborhood Watch training, and Self Defense for Women. These are just a few of the things they provide, and the list is longer than I can put in this article.

So there you have it. The Wylie Police Department are a group of people who are here to protect and serve you. The next time your stopped for a traffic violation don’t think badly of them, they didn’t do the violation, you did.

When you see a Police Officer, thank them for their service and for what they do, and remember that it’s because of what they do that you, your home, and community are safe and secure.

Fire and Rescue in Wylie Tx 75098

Monday, July 7th, 2008

In todays world not much is said about the real hero’s in our communities. We mostly accept the fact that they are there but do not give them the credit or respect they are entitled to. This article will deal with the Fire Department in Wylie Texas.

The Wylie Fire Department covers approximately 60 square miles in Southeast collin county. Currently it has 2 Fire stations manned 24/7 and a temporary station, with a permanent Station number 3 under construction. The 2 permanent stations currently have ‘Quint’ fire truck’s. A ‘Quint’ truck combines the five functions of an engine and ladder truck, which are a pump, water tank, fire hose, an aerial device, and ground ladders. They also have 3 MICU ambulances which serve the current 32,000+ residents of Wylie of which a large percentage are elderly citizens, along with an ever growing number of young families, and businesses. Since the 2000 census Wylie has doubled it’s population, and is considered one of the fastest growing suburbs in Dallas Texas. The City of Wylie, and it’s Fire Department are dedicated to keeping up with the phenomenal growth of this area.

The Wylie Fire Department was founded and established in 1909, and their mission statement is “Dedicating themselves to provide a progressively trained, and fully equipped department in order to protect the lives, property, and environment of Wylie Texas”. This is a large task since they also provide service for the Southeast Collin County Coalition. In addition to Wylie Texas proper they also provide extra-territorial coverage under contract to St. Paul Texas and portions of Dallas County, Rockwall County, and Lavon Lake.

Their staff currently includes a Chief, assistant Chief, EMS Captain, Fire Marshall, Fire Inspector/Investigator, and Administrative personnel. They are rated as a Class 1 Department by the Insurance Services Office (ISO). They have a PPC rating of 1 which is split because of their outside protected area’s, which are properties located within 1 mile of a city limit border. The State Fire Marshall, G. Mike Davis, states that “a PPC rating of 1 translates into the best fire protection available, creating lower property insurance rates”.

Wylie Texas is located within 3 miles of Lavon Lake which provides the residents as well as visitors with great fishing, boating, camping, swimming, and water sports. The Wylie Fire Department has a Fire Rescue Division which is surpassed by none. They are well trained and have the best equipment available to them to do a superior job. They currently have 2 hovercraft, and an all terrain vehicle called the Ranger, and a pontoon craft called Marine 1 which they operate in the performance of their duties. This video will show you a Hovercraft Training Session. This is one of two Neoteric Hovercraft owned by the Wylie Fire Rescue.

the Wylie Fire Rescue.

Your community’s Fire Department is one of the key links to your community’s safety and existence. If you see a Fireman, Thank Him or Her, for their work and sacrifice.

Businesses have come and gone on Ballard, and in December 1998, two fires (one on the 9th and another on the 11th) destroyed and/ or damaged a dozen or so businesses. The city and it’s citizens used this unfortunate opportunity to revitalize the downtown area.

Wylie Texas is a city in Southeast Collin County and is a Northeast suburb of Dallas Texas. With it’s rapid growth since the year 2000 it has spread into Dallas County, and Rockwall County in the U.S. census for the State of Texas. With the 2000 census, the city population was 15,132, but recent rapid growth has 2004 estimates suggesting the population is at 25,850. Once solely located in Collin County, Wylie has extended into neighboring Dallas and Rockwall counties. Both Lake Lavon and Lake Ray Hubbard are within easy reach of the city. Since the 2000 census the population has grown 109.3%, making Wylie number 8 on the list of fastest growing cities in the nation. Current population is now listed at 32,696 with an estimated growth to 39,000 + or - by the end of 2008, by the City of Wylie.

In the 1890s, the town of Wylie had been served by one small school with limited funding primarily by the parents of students of the school. Ovid Birmingham noticed this problem and established the Wylie ISD in 1901-1902. He set limits of the district that all citizens in that area would pay taxes to uphold the district. The Birmingham family soon provided money to build the Original Wylie High School. The School has moved from several buildings in its history.

Most of the Collin County portion of Wylie is served by Wylie Independent School District. The Dallas County portion is served by Garland Independent School District. The Rockwall County portion is served by Rockwall Independent School District.

Wylie ISD is a fast growing school system in southern Collin County, 24 miles northeast of metropolitan Dallas and its cultural, educational and recreational amenities. Covering 41 square miles, the UIL Class 5A district of more than 10,000 students serves the City of Wylie as well as families in the surrounding communities of Sachse, Murphy, Lucas, Lavon and St. Paul Texas.

The City of Wylie has it’s eye set on education. Available schooling is comprised of the Wylie ISD, Private Schools comprised of Pre-K preporitory and full curicullum schools, and Home Schooling by independent parents.

The Wylie ISD offers an outstanding academic program with a focus on character education beginning in elementary school. The curriculum includes a wide range of programs from culinary arts to television production. The district emphasizes technology in the classroom with that being a communications tool for parents. The current 17 campuses include Wylie High School (grades 10 through 12), Wylie East High School (grade 9), Special Programs Center (grades K-12), three junior high schools (grades 7 and 8), three intermediate schools (grades 5 and 6) and eight elementary campuses (grades Pre-K through 4).

In 2007, Wylie East High School opened for the 2007-2008 school year. The school serves solely the ninth grade students. Wylie East will become a 9-12 school with Class of 2012 being the first class to graduate after the district voted to go with multiple 9-12 campuses in January 2008.

It’s Mission Statement is “The Wylie Independent School District, in partnership with parents and the community, will provide all students a world-class academic education which will prepare them to lead successful and productive lives.”

The Student Demographics, as of 2006 statistics is comprised of the following: 51% Male; 49% Female - 62% Caucasian - 18% Hispanic - 13% African American - 5% Asian - 1% Native American. and 1% Other. Economically disadvantaged 21%, and the Average student to teacher ratio is 15:1.

In summary, with all of the above said, Wylie Texas is dedicated to education. In addition to those area’s discussed above there are a number of Community Colleges, Trade Education programs, as well as others located within Wylie, Collin County and the outlying area’s of Wylie. So if you’re moving to Wylie or thinking about a move feel confident that as far as education it is here, either in Wylie or within reach with a few miles of travel.

It’s a pretty much accepted fact that a Texas home is one of the best investments you can make; but like many things in life, timing is everything. Recent worrisome talk about subprime mortgages, falling property values, foreclosures and slow real estate markets are keeping more than a few homeowners up at night.
